Only two more sleeps until TASA 2018!
We are looking forward to seeing many of you next week for the 2018 TASA Conference at Deakin University, Melbourne.
This year we have a number special joint sessions running. The Media and G&S sessions will take place on Tuesday 10:30-12:30 and Wednesday 10:30-12:30. The Sociology of Religion and G&S session is on Wednesday afternoon, 1:30-3:30. All will be held in HE3.004 – more details available in the conference handbook and app.
Thematic Group Meeting
The G&S thematic group meeting will be held on Wednesday 21 November, 12:30pm – 1:30pm in HE1.009.
This year’s Queer Drinks will be at Nevermind Bar in Hawthorn on Tuesday the 20th from 7pm until late. Queer drinks is a time for LGBTIQ folks and their allies to get together informally to talk about shared research and activism. It is also an opportunity to socialise and get to know one another. Julie Peters will will be launching her book, A Feminist Post-transsexual Autoethnography Challenging Normative Gender Coercion.
The cost is $15pp and includes nibbles and one drink on arrival. If you know of anyone who is getting FOMO, don’t worry, there is still room – just email Jessica Moebus to purchase a ticket: firstname.lastname@example.org
If people want to share taxis or an Uber from Deakin University to Nevermind Bar, meet at University Entrance 2, on Burwood Highway, to connect with people, between 6-7pm. If you are using public transport, Nevermind Bar is 25 mins via Tram 75. The stop is across from University Entrance 2 and departs every 10-15 mins. You can view the campus map here.
The first national survey of trans and gender diverse sexual health in Australia is still seeking participants, but it won’t be open for much longer. If you are a trans or gender diverse person, aged 16+ and living in Australia, you can take the 15 minute survey here. Please help spread the word through your networks so it can reach as many people as possible before it closes! You can also check out and share the short video the researchers have made.
We are looking for a new co-convenor of Genders and Sexualities this year, to join Kythera, who will be continuing in the role. Yarrow is stepping down from the role, as they plan to pursue other projects outside academia next year. If you are interested, please let us know, either by email or have a chat with us during the conference.
See you all soon,
Kythera and Yarrow
